Assembly Bill 763 Summary

SealofCaliforniaStateSeal

In 2015-2016, a bill was presented as AB 2565. In 2016-2017, the bill changed to AB 763. The bill is an amendment to update the current Welfare & Institutions Code verbiage to allow base-rate funding ($235K annually) to three Independent Living Centers in California. One of these Centers is the Independent Living Center of Kern County (ILCKC). This bill has been championed by Assemblymember Rudy Salas, and co-authored by all of our local State Senators and State Assemblymembers representing Kern County.

AB 763 passed through the State Assembly, but was held in suspense with the Senate Appropriations Committee on August 31, 2017. This is very disapproving news for ILCKC and Kern County.  This is permanent funding exclusively for people with disabilities, and exclusively for Kern County. Steps for next year are yet to be determined, but ILCKC Executive Director Jimmie Soto will continue to work with Kern supporters and legislators to finalize this issue.
